GUY’S HOSPITAL, SOUTHWALK – November 6, 1892, late evening. It was a miserable, drizzly, cold night in the front quad of Guy’s Hospital. A fog had swirled up from the nearby Thames a couple of days before and had hung in the air adding to the gloom. The nightwatchmen, about to lock the gates for the night, yelled their familiar warning: ‘Lock, Lock, Lock.’ But then they noticed that there was something afoot in the east wing.
